Giving away free donuts? Make sure they’re good

Donut shops keep popping up in every corner of Singapore recently. A new franchise in Raffles City is about to open in a week’s time, and they spent today giving away free donuts for people to try. Unfortunately, it isn’t as good as I hoped. I was able to try two flavors earlier, and there is just something wrong with the dough.

So far, none of the donut shops in Singapore has come close to Krispy Kremes. They try so many gimmicks here: making people queue for half and hour, giving donuts for free, etc. Gimmicks aren’t enough these days. At least with Krispy Kreme in the Philippines giving a year’s supply of donuts for free to their first customer during opening day (a more free donuts to the first 500), it generates positive buzz because people line up for hours and they know they’ll be getting mouthwatering donuts.

The new donut place in Raffles City is another example of something that looks good on the outside (the restaurant layout and ambiance is similar to Starbucks), but the quality of their donuts isn’t up to par.

I hope their coffee will be better.

Tune In to Unique-Frequency

In Social Media class today, Michael Netzley recommended a blog of a fellow classmate. Without hesitation, I googled ‘daryl smube’. Daryl is his name and I figured that he belonged to SMUBE based from his name card. Voila! His blog, Unique-Frequency, was right up there. In short, his blog focuses on media.

Daryl’s blog is now subscribed under my Google reader because after skimming through his entries, I found that we have similar interests: marketing, Godin, TED, web 2.0, etc. Better yet, he’s in the same school and class as me. As Michael likes to put it, this is an excellent example of “People Like Me”.

Based from his personal blog, I think that Daryl has been on the blogosphere for quite some time now. What he has done since early last year was to focus on a single topic: media. That’s smart because more people like me will start reading his blog as we find it useful and interesting.

With more than 20 entries in less than a month, there’s always something to look forward to in Unique-Frequency. Keep it up, Daryl.

Whopper Lovers Get Punked

Check out the latest viral campaign from Burger King:

It’s pretty good, eh? If I had a chance to take advertising class again, I’d choose this ad for Show & Tell. What I like about it is the candidness of their customers when they found out about the disappearance of BK’s iconic burger. It shows the impact BK has on its customers. Check out their reactions towards the end of the clip, which adds a very nice emotional touch to the ad.

I originally saw this YouTube video on Mitch Joel’s blog Six Pixels of Separation, and one of his comments on the blog post regarding this video was the time spent on all these social media that’s now available online. (I just spent an hour earlier reading about Twitter and its promise as a marketing tool.) People now are spending a lot time online visiting blogs, social networks, watching videos on YouTube, etc. I wonder how they manage to get other things done.

I’m still halfway reading through my RSS feeds. I think I’d be spending the whole afternoon today just reading all those feeds.

It’s time to start filtering the Must-Reads from the It-Can-Waits.
