More Productive Use of Email

I just finished clearing my Gmail inbox and it took me over 2 hours just to read, delete, reply and archive over 500 emails that haven’t been touched for the past month and a half. It’s a big waste of time so from today onwards, I’ll be setting fixed times during the day dedicated to checking my email: in the morning when I get up, after lunch and before going to bed. I’ll also try to spend at most 30 minutes per session.

I need to change my email habits. It feels good to have zero emails in your inbox at the end of each day.

Do you guys have any other email-related productivity tips?

And I’m Back!

It’s been a long 29 days and Europe and all I can say is that the trip was FANTASTIC!

I had tons of fun with the girlfriend (despite all the arguments that came with the trip), and this trip was definitely good for the relationship.

Since I arrived, I’ve been too busy catching up on shows and sorting out my photos (while dreaming of an iPhone 3G). Let me get those out of the way before I start blogging again.

It’s good to be back although I miss the traveling and the sightseeing. I’ve been away from internet life for more than a month now ever since exam period started in April. It didn’t help being away from home and staying in hostels around Europe. Fortunately, I was able to use the net once in a while which I will write about soon.

Stay tuned for photos from the trip! :)

Gone Eurotrippin’

I’m off to Europe with Val today. As much as I wanted to blog and clear my RSS feeds before I left, I was just too busy planning. Do visit our blog ‘Gone Eurotrippin‘ for updates during our trip. I also created a kyte channel to hopefully send some video updates to family and friends back home. (There are no updates yet, but do check from time to time if I get the chance to upload some videos.)

Update (06-11-2008): I forgot my memory stick adapter for my phone back in Singapore therefore not being able to shoot and upload some videos. Darn! Just wait for the pictures or check our Gone Eurotrippin blog.

It’s going to be an adventure. Wish us luck!

Fake Steve Jobs Talks About New Media (and his blog)

It’s been a while since I last blogged. Actually, since my university life ended last week after I took my last exam, my life online took a break too - my unread emails kept on piling up, RSS feeds were untouched, time spent on Facebook was close to none and Twitter usage dropped significantly. I’m not sure why but I’ve been busy with other things like the work here in Yahoo! and planning for my Euro trip which is happening in 2 weeks. I’ve to start picking up with my online activities again before I leave for my trip because I won’t have any time to blog or read RSS feeds then.

Fortunately, I came across this presentation by the Fake Steve Jobs a.k.a. Daniel Lyons from the Web 2.0 Expo recently, which inspired me to login to WordPress again and start writing. It’s a keynote that “You Gotta See” according to Stephan Spencer. Daniel Lyons, being a senior editor for Forbes and a blogger, talks about the shift that’s happening between traditional and new media. The most interesting part of his presentation was the background info on why he started his blog. I won’t go on too much and just let you watch his keynote. Enjoy!

Follow-Up: Pecha Kucha Night Singapore

When we arrived at Frujch for Pecha Kucha, you can sense a totally different atmosphere than usual. Frujch was filled with professionals from the creative industry (and there were a few students like me). Before the presentations even started, you can already sense their creativity through the chatter, their outfits and of course the plastic eye-glasses with the funky hair.

Overall, the presentations that night were entertaining (except for a couple) and informative. My favorite from the night was the presentation by Graham Perkins, a consultant, who talked about creativity and the education system. He presented first about a topic that was relevant to the audience. More importantly, he was the only one that stuck to the 20X20 format of Pecha Kucha. Like the way it should be done, he timed his slides to transition every 20 seconds and he adapted what he was going to say to that constraint. I was impressed with the design of his slides so I went to Google him and found out that his career was surrounded with creativity from Adobe down to MTV Asia. Kudos to Graham for presenting Pecha Kucha the right way.

HJGHER somewhat followed the 20×20 format but I’m not sure if each slide lasted 20 seconds. I’ve to review that from the video that I took. They presented a well-written short story accompanied by photographs which made it look like a semi-short film. It was probably my second favorite and it was a nice way to end the night as they presented last.

Andrew Lo from MTV Asia was the most entertaining that night because of his personality and his courage to present the reasons why he hates MTV. Although I think that he should have stopped after his last point and chose not to present about MTV’s campaigns because it completely went off topic and he kinda lost the audience then. (Oh yeah! When I first saw this guy, I thought he looked really familiar. Found out later that he was the guy behind the Spot the VJ campaign which I saw the making of on TV.)

Steve Lawler’s (not the DJ) was visually stimulating. He’s a very talented guy and it was nice to learn about the inspirations behind his work. He fascination with Stanley Kubrick is something worth remembering.

The rest of the presentations were just alright. I felt that they were presenting too much about themselves and their work. Even though Pecha Kucha Nights let you present on any topic, it would be nice to watch a presentation and learn something new. Not something that we can just read off the About page on their website. This is why Graham Perkins was the best of the night: everyone in the audience listened to “ideas worth spreading”. (His presentations reminded me of TED Talks, which he made several references to.)

To sum it up, the first Pecha Kucha Night Singapore was a success! Can’t wait for the next one. I’ve got all the presentations on this Kyte channel. Enjoy!

Pecha Kucha Nights Arrives in Singapore

My heart skipped a beat when I read a post by Daryl from Unique-Frequency that there was going to be a Pecha Kucha Night: Singapore. I’ve always been a fan of creative presentations and the different styles you can experiment with. I first learned about Pecha Kucha through the presentation guru, Garr Reynolds. You can read his post on Pecha Kucha vis his blog, Presentation Zen. According to Garr:

The Pecha Kucha method of presentation design and delivery is very simple. You must use 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds, as you tell your story. That’s 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Slides advance automatically and when you’re done you’re done. That’s it.”

What got me thinking initially was how or who initiated the first ever Pecha Kucha Night here in Singapore. I learned from Daryl’s post that it’s Peiling, a fellow SMU student, who’s behind this event. She’s been working really hard for this night and they now have good sponsors and a handful of speakers from different industries. (Peiling, if you read this, I just wanted to ask you why you decided to start Pecha Kucha Night in Singapore? and who are the other people behind the event helping you out?) UPDATE: After last night, I found out that it’s a group project for one of Michael Netzley’s classes in SMU. :)

Here are some of the speakers for tomorrow night:

  • Andrew Lo, Creative Director (on-air promotion, multi-platform content & telco digital) of MTV Asia
  • Holman Chin, General Manager of Viscion Media
  • Keshav, Free Lance photographer (SMU student)
  • Mun Hon - engineer by day, soap maker by night!
  • Steve Lawler, creative director @ Kult (kult.com.sg)
  • Mark Wee, architect @ Annex-A (annex-a.com.sg)
  • Justin & Jerry, designers, HJGHER (hjgher.com)
  • Graham Perkins, Consultant

Be sure to check out their Facebook event page for more info.

I’m really looking forward to the presentations tomorrow night. It’s going to be a diverse group of people attending so it’s going to be interesting to see what topics they present on.

Do check back for my review of Pecha Kucha Night Singapore.

10 Signs that You’re Addicted to Twitter

  1. You care more about the number of followers you have compared to your Technorati Authority ranking. (You just wish that you’d make it to the Twitterholic Top 100 by the end of the year.)
  2. When writing an email, you mistakenly type @(Your Twitter-buddy’s screen name) instead of @gmail.com.
  3. Twitter becomes your main mode of replying to your girlfriend’s SMS. (After you beg her to sign up for an account)
  4. You play Wordy Birdie and Tweet140 instead of going over to Jack’s place for Friday Night Poker.
  5. You start to feel like you’ve known people like Robert Scoble, Guy Kawasaki and Chris Brogan for years.
  6. Your whole life is broadcast on Twitter - from what you eat, your proposal and your dirty little secrets. Private life no more.
  7. You prefer to read Twitter updates from events like MacWorld rather than watch Steve Jobs do his magic on stage.
  8. The planning for this summer’s backpacking trip is done through Twittervision and Twitter Atlas. Goodbye TripAdvisor.
  9. Every sentence that comes out of your mouth contains less than 140 characters.
  10. After reading this blog entry, you copy and paste the url to TinyUrl or Snurl and share it via your preferred Twitter desktop app.
